“Learning requires the humility to realize one has something to learn.” A recent Instagram post by famed author and marketer, Daniel Pink, shared this Elizabeth J Krumrei-Mancuso quote on Instagram.

Mancuso is a professor of Psychology at the University of Pepperdine and in 2022 published a study titled, “Cultivating Intellectual Humility in Leaders: Potential Benefits, Risks, and Practical Tools,” in the American Journal of Health.

The study explores the cultivation and effects of intellectual humility within leaders today. Far too often business owners and managers, think they know everything and operate in a company-centric fashion. They collect minimal data from hearsay, Google reviews, and a customer comment here and there and think they know their customer base without collecting quantitative date.

I saw Daniel Pink speak in 2013 at the Qualtrics Insights Summit and it was eye-opening. He’s written books such as, To Sell is Human, Drive, and When – all of which I’ve read and highly recommend. Pink takes the reader on a journey of practical tests and everyday situations to influence consumer (and personal) behavior.

If you’re a business owner, I urge you to think with an open mind. Accept your operations and marketing have room to grow and experiment on a weekly basis.
